Bhubaneswar: Preparations are in the final stage for today’s Rukuna Rath Yatra, the annual chariot festival of Lord Lingaraj on the occasion of Ashokastami.
The ceremonies started at the eleventh-century sanctuary toward the beginning of the day enabling aficionados to have a look at the divinities in a custom called Sahana Mela.
After the arrangement of services, bronze figures of the three divinities Chandrasekhar, Rukmini, and Basudev-will be introduced on the chariot in the midst of boisterous beats of gongs, blowing of conchs and droning of psalms.
According to the timetable, the chariots will be dragged for a city visit at 4 pm. The divinities riding on the chariot will travel a separation of around 2 km to achieve Mausima sanctuary where they will remain for 5 days.
The uniqueness of this festival lies in the auction of water from Marichi Kunda, the holy water said to cure infertility in women and bless them with a child. Various arrangements are made for devotees during the ‘yatra’, which witnesses heavy footfall.
As per the information of temple administration, today yatra will resume at 03 o clock.
